MarketPlace PHL and Philabundance End the Year Strong

Since March 2019, Marketplace PHL and OTG restaurants have collaborated with Philabundance as part of a community outreach initiative to assist Philadelphia International Airport's (PHL) neighbors-in-need and prevent food waste. Since then, an estimated 80,000 pounds of food have been rescued from some airport restaurants and “grab-and-go” locations and donated to Philabundance for meals for members of the community. In total, Philabundance calculates over 66,300 meals have been served to date using food from Marketplace PHL concessions.

At PHL, a central collection point was identified and equipped with a donation refrigerator, freezer, and dry shelf. Merchants bring surplus food to the collection point where it is then picked up by a Philabundance-related agency. Many of the donated items are pre-wrapped prepared foods, such as sandwiches and salads. Philabundance coordinates logistics with agencies in their network to ensure the rescued food is in the hands of those in need within hours.

"Marketplace PHL views our partnership with Philabundance as highly significant," said Operations Manager William "Bill" Gardiner. "This partnership is part of the airport's major sustainability goals, which also include recycling and reducing our carbon footprints."

Notable PHL donors have included Chickie’s & Pete’s, OTG, HMS Host, La Colombe, Chick-fil-A, and Hudson News.

“Philabundance is proud of our close partnership with MarketPlace PHL and Philadelphia International Airport. We are grateful for their continued support in providing nutritious food to our community,” said Philabundance CEO Loree Jones Brown. “We appreciate the variety of grab-n-go items they provide, including sandwiches, yogurts, meals, and snacks. Partnerships like this help Philabundance serve nutritious food to more than 135,000 people each week -- an astounding one-third of whom are children.”
