Destination Edinburgh!

From royal residences to arts festivals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh has something for everyone. And from May 23-October 4, it will be easier for Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) guests to travel to this magical city — via an American Airlines nonstop flight.

Take a Stroll Along the Royal Mile

Some of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings can be found on the Royal Mile. This historic thoroughfare connects Edinburgh Castle, home of the oldest crown jewels in the United Kingdom, to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of King Charles in Scotland. Along the route, stop by St. Giles’ Cathedral, John Knox House and The Writers’ Museum.

Attractions for Travelers of All Ages--- and Budgets

Edinburgh is a city of museums, many of which offer admission free of charge. Enjoy art? Stop by the three National Galleries of Scotland. Interested in the history of Scotland? Don’t miss the National Museum.

Want to take in the outdoors?  Take a hike up Arthur’s Seat- an ancient volcano and the highest point in Holyrood Park, or amble through The Royal Botanic Garden with its extensive plant collections and serene landscapes.

Of course, Muggles won’t want to leave Edinburgh before seeking out Harry Potter-related sites.

A Foodie’s Paradise

Edinburgh's culinary scene ranges from traditional- think haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes) — to world-renowned Michelin-starred fine dining. Don’t miss Stockbridge Market and the Leith for fresh produce, artisanal goods, and delicious street food.

Daytrips

For those spending more than a few days in Edinburgh, the capital city is just a short drive away from some of Scotland’s famous destinations, including St. Andrews, the home of golf, and Loch Ness. Who’s ready to search for Nessie?

Remember, if you are traveling to the United Kingdom and you are not a British or Irish citizen, you will need to complete an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before you arrive. The ETA application can be completed with an app available for iPhones and Androids. The cost is about $13 (£10). For more information on ETAs and the application, visit gov.uk/check-uk-visa/y/usa/tourism
