Change Your Altitude: Airport Construction Workshop

The City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation recently hosted the “Change Your Altitude: Airport Construction Workshop” for contractors and subcontractors. Attendees learned about the range of construction opportunities at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE), how to identify upcoming bids, tips for success at the airport for construction contractors, and diversity goals.

"I have worked in City procurement for a long time. It is great to see a shift in our industry where there is an intense focus on leveling the playing field to ensure equal access to anyone who wants to participate in the procurement process.” said Deatrice Isaac, the airports’ Vice President of Procurement.

Attendees networking

Attendees were able to take advantage of the opportunity to network with personnel from the Department of Aviation’s Procurement, Diversity, and Capital Development Departments.

“It was clear that businesses are as excited as we are about the upcoming opportunities - we look forward to building great things together.  Many thanks to the Department of Aviation, MarketplacePHL, and prime contractor representatives who gave great insight and information to our construction firm attendees.” said Denise Bailey, the airports’ Vice President of Business Diversity and Accessibility.

The event attracted 41 business representatives, with 63 percent of those representing diverse businesses.

"Denise and I joke all the time that we are opening our own business called "2D". But all jokes aside, it is great to have a colleague and true partner in this work. We are committed to increasing minority and small business participation in all contracting opportunities at the Airport. I am honored to be a part of this work," said Isaac.

Be on the lookout for the next workshop in the Department of Aviation’s capacity-building initiatives for businesses under the Change Your Altitude series.
