PHL's Fire Alarm System Upgrades Program Continues

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is currently in the midst of a multi-phased Fire Alarm/Prevention Upgrades Program. The first phase included an airport-wide upgrade of audio and visual notification system associated with the Fire Alarm and Detection System. The second phase replaced sensors and enhanced ventilation systems to meet safety occupancy requirements.

In its current phase, the Fire Alarm/Prevention Upgrades Program is set to make several technological and infrastructural enhancements to the current fire detection system. The airport's engineering team has prioritized replacing all local fire alarm panels with more advanced system. Unlike the previous zone-dependent system, the modern system offers precise location tracking, significantly elevating the precision, and response times during critical moments. The upgrade extends beyond panels to include all peripheral devices, network lines between panels, and the main control panel. Notably, this phase introduces fiber network technology, which ensures enhanced reliability and faster communication throughout the system.

The current phase is set to transition from the planning to design stage in the coming weeks, with Airport Engineering Assistant Manager Thomas Joseph leading the team. Collaboration is key to the project's success – the Department of Aviation’s Capital Development Group and IT Department has been working on this effort with external firms Primera and Burns Engineering, who have played key roles in bringing this project to life.

As the program progresses, it aims to significantly enhance the airport's fire prevention system – prioritizing safety standards for all passengers and staff. Stay tuned for more updates on this program as it continues to take shape.
