This summer, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is hosting its annual internship program to give college students a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work in aviation and public service. “Intern Experience 2025” (iX25), is an eight-week initiative will help 26 interns to gain on-the-job experience while building professional skills and connections.
Students participating in the internship program come from schools like Drexel University, West Chester University, Howard University, Temple University, Penn State, University of Maryland, and Villanova and are working in departments like Communications, Marketing, Engineering, Accounting, Human Resources, Guest Experience, Government Affairs, Workforce Development, IT, Purchasing, and Community Outreach.
The iX25 program is more than just office work. Interns are taking part in fun hands-on activities designed to prepare them for their future careers. Some of the highlights include:
- June 16 – A visit with Philadelphia City Council
- June 17 - “Chat & Chew with Chiefs”
- July 11 – A tour of PHL
- July 16 - “Art Gallery Walk” in PHL Terminals
- July 22-23 – Tour of Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE)
The program concludes with a Shark Tank-style pitch competition, where interns will present innovative ideas that align with PHL’s and PNE’s strategic plan. Their ideas should focus on improving conditions of current facilities, elevating the airport experience, enhancing business opportunities, and building for the future.
Shelby Holmes, a strategic communications intern from the University of Maryland, said, “At PHL, I feel that my skills and time as an intern are valued. I’m gaining hands-on experience in the field of communications, while also learning the behind-the-scenes operations of the aviation industry.”
Starting July 7, iX25 will also welcome high school students (ages 16–18) for a shorter version of the program. They’ll get a similar chance to explore aviation careers and build their skills for the future.
“iX25 is a meaningful step toward future career success. For these interns, the runway to opportunity starts here,” said Airport Public Affairs Supervisor Shawn Hawes.
