Paradies Lagardère Zone Manager Makhlouf Akif received the “Impression Maker” award from Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) Employee Recognition Program, in recognition of his commitment to delivering exceptional customer service in his role.
In his role, Akif leads his team with a focus on accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence, ensuring both employees and passengers have a positive experience. His responsibilities include overseeing store operations, coaching employees, and maintaining alignment across his team. Akif has been working at PHL for over two years, using the opportunity to grow professionally and contribute to the airport community. Prior to his role at PHL, he served as a Financial Executive Accountant and Chief Accounting Officer at Sonatrach, Africa’s largest petroleum company, where he developed strong leadership, discipline, and a results-driven mindset that continues to guide his work today.

Akif was nominated by two individuals–a passenger and a fellow colleague. “As a passenger, I was deeply impressed by Makhlouf’s professionalism, kindness, and willingness to go above and beyond. He greeted me with warmth, answered my questions with patience and clarity, and took the time to ensure my needs were fully met. What stood out most was his ability to balance efficiency with compassion—even in a busy airport, he treated me with respect and attentiveness. His support turned a potentially stressful situation into a smooth and pleasant experience, truly reflecting the highest standards of customer service,” said Karima Hadjeband.
Colleague Zakaria Saber said, “I am proud to nominate Makhlouf, whose commitment, reliability, and professionalism have been invaluable to our team. He consistently completes every task with accuracy and efficiency, often going above and beyond to support others. His helpful nature makes him not only a key asset but also a role model for excellence, and he truly deserves this recognition.”
Akif believes that a true leader creates other leaders and finds it rewarding to help his team grow professionally. “I enjoy the energy and diversity of people passing through the airport. It’s exciting to see how our work makes a tangible difference in their travel experience,” Akif said. One of his most memorable moments at PHL was assisting an elderly French passenger who felt lost and frustrated while trying to find her gate. Because she did not speak English, Akif guided her in French, reassured her, and ensured she made it to her flight on time. The experience reinforced his passion for helping others and creating a positive impact.
Akif’s coworkers describe him as respectful, supportive, dependable, and a leader who relies on his team and encourages collaboration. Rooted in his Amazigh Berber heritage, he carries values of resilience, discipline, and perseverance. He aims to inspire and develop others, enhance the passenger experience, and contribute to a strong culture of excellence at PHL.

The PHL Employee Recognition Program was established by the airport’s Strategy Groups’ Guest Experience (GX) unit. Honorees are nominated by their peers and guests and are selected by the GX Council Steering Committee’s Stakeholder Engagement Committee.
