Women’s History Month: Andrea Manley’s Journey in Aviation, Engineering and as a Building Services Administrator

March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the remarkable contributions of women. In the aviation sector, women have made tremendous strides. This time,Manley n 1998 the spotlight is on the journey of one of the first women engineers at PHL, Andrea Manley, who has been an important member of the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) team since 1998.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Manley began her career at PHL after earning her degree in Civil Engineering. Her arrival into the engineering department marked a historic milestone at PHL. Alongside another female engineer, she became one of the first women to hold an engineering position at the airport. Reflecting on her start, Manley recalls how she was ready and full of ambition to take on the challenges in a field that had long been male-dominated. Fortunately, she found guidance in several mentors who helped her navigate the challenges of the workplace.

After spending over 10 years in Engineering, Manley joined the Facilities team where she is now responsible for facilities contract management. In her current role as Building Services Administrator, she oversees the preventive maintenance and repair services of major general building systems and support services on the airport grounds. As a woman in aviation and engineering, she takes great pride in the work she’s accomplished, but she also remains focused on the future. She is committed to creating a pathway for the next generation of women engineers and facilities managers, just as her mentors did for her. Manley shares. “I want to make sure that the doors I’ve opened are held open for the next person.”

Her dedication to supporting others extends beyond her personal journey. She participates in student tours at the airport, where she introduces young people to the world of aviation and engineering. “The tours are especially rewarding because they inspire students to pursue careers they might not have considered before,” Manley shares and it’s something she truly enjoys: “I love talking to kids. They are bright and curious, and it’s a joy to show them what we do.”

PHL TourHer message to young women is " Don’t be afraid to enter fields that are traditionally male-dominated. Whether it’s engineering, skilled trades, or aviation, women can and should take up space in these industries,” she says. “Once we’re there, we thrive. And I want more women to explore these opportunities.” She is proud to see more women entering non-traditional spaces, such as elevator mechanics, electricians, and plumbers. These areas are growing in diversity, thanks in part to women like Andrea Manley who are leading the way.

“I want to be the mentor that I needed when I was young.” She hopes that by continuing to pave the way, more women will feel empowered to follow in her footsteps, knowing that the door is always open for them.
