PHL EMPLOYEE PROFILE: ACTING BUDGET OFFICER SHAQUNNA DUNCAN

What is your current position, responsibilities and duties at PHL and how long have you worked here?

I’m the Acting Budget Officer and I distribute, track and monitor the entire airports budget which includes the  interdepartmental units Police, Fire, Law, and Fleet. I’m currently approaching my seventh year of employment with the City of Philadelphia Division of Aviation.

Why did you decide to work at PHL and what’s the most meaningful part of your job?

I didn’t chose to work at PHL, it choose me. I took an exam for an Account Clerk position about 8 years ago with the City of Philadelphia and I was selected off the list by PHL, which I’m EXTREMELY happy about. The most meaningful part of my job is being able to find funding for new initiatives for the airport.

What do you enjoy most about the airport?

The things I enjoy most about the airport is the people I work with and meet throughout the various shops.

What are some of the key principals/personal mantra by which you live by and what inspires you?

I’m a very optimistic person! I try to find a silver lining in all challenging situations and I always carry around a positive attitude.

Are you on any committees at the airport? If so what do you enjoy about the committee? What are the goals of the committee and what do you appreciate about the committee?

I’m currently on the Employee Engagement Committee. The goal of the committee is to engage with all 800+ employees at the airport. Whether it's for informational purposes or just plane fun. The thing I appreciate most about the committee is that we try to find creative ways to reach every single employee. It's challenging trying to reach all 800+ employees due to different shifts and the many different locations employees work.

Do you have any ‘favorites’ (eateries, retail shops, amenities, etc.) that you would recommend to family and friends traveling through PHL?

I would recommend Bud & Marilyn's eatery. Their food is sooooooo amazing.

What’s your most memorable moment at PHL? (Working with a passenger or stakeholder)

My most memorable moment is the PHL Employee Appreciation event we had last year. The event was informational, it offered trainings and most important it was fun for ALL employees. We were able to accommodate all 800+ employees with offering 3 different event dates/times.

What challenges has your department faced since the COVID-19 pandemic and how have you and your co-workers overcome those challenges?

BUDGET REDUCTIONS! Due to COVID-19 the airport revenue has declined drastically, which affected our budget. The challenges my department has faced was trying to reduce all expenses but at the same time purchase essential COVID-19 items. Working with all the units managers along with PAU, we were able to keep expenses down as well as acquire COVID-19 related items.

What professional and personal goals are you trying to accomplish during COVID-19?

My professional goal is to make sure PHL remains within our fiscal year budget. My personal goal is continue to workout during the pandemic.

Shaqunna was honored with a 2019 PHL Employee Excellence Award. She is shown above with PHL CEO Chellie Cameron at the November 2019 ceremony.
