Located in West Philadelphia, the University City Arts League (UCAL) was founded in 1967, by local artists, arts enthusiasts, and neighborhood residents to offer art and related programming. Its original commitment to the local community thrives to this day, as “almost no neighborhood art fair takes place without an Arts League presence.”
The League’s programming includes an array of visual arts and performing arts classes for children and adults; gallery exhibitions that feature artwork by local and emerging artists; and on-going events. UCAL strives to be a “welcoming space for people of all backgrounds to experience the arts, to encourage and support the development of the arts, and bring the arts to the community through partnerships and educational outreach.”
The artwork in this exhibition was created during one-day workshops by youth artists from West Philadelphia, summer camp students from HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy, 7th Graders at Henry C. Lea School, and students from UCAL’s Youth Arts Programs.
UCAL hopes that this artwork helps to “enrich the viewer’s perspective of our city and the possibilities that we imagine for it.”
