The 2025 Sustainability Report provides staff, passengers, tenants and other stakeholders insight into how Philadelphia International Airport and Northeast Philadelphia Airport are achieving progress on sustainability and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s mission of making a greener Philadelphia.

The Department of Aviation has set some ambitious goals in recent years, such as achieving net zero carbon by 2050 and zero waste by 2035. Our annual reports provide an overview of our annual progress towards these goals and highlight the many ways in which we are integrating sustainability into airport operations and infrastructure.

This year, we have exciting news to share:

• From 2019 to 2025, the Airport reduced fossil fuel usage by 32%, by transitioning its fleet from fossil fuel to electric vehicles and converting passenger and employee shuttle buses from diesel fuel to compressed natural gas. With 15 electric vehicles (EVs) and nine EV chargers in place, and five high speed EV chargers under construction, we are gearing up to rapidly expand fleet electrification.   

• The Airport installed a beautiful native plant landscape, influenced by the historic habitat and streams of our waterfront location, along the “front door” of the PHL terminal and completed an extensive inventory of all tree species on airport property.

• The Airport established sustainable design standards for all capital projects in 2023, and to date 51 Airport-led projects and 40 tenant-led projects have followed these standards to reduce environmental impact through energy efficiency, recycled-content and non-toxic materials and waste reduction.

• Our construction and demolition waste recycling requirements have saved over 150,000 tons of material from ending up in our local landfills since 2023. Our construction waste diversion rate for 2025 was an impressive 98%. 

• In 2025 alone, the Airport saved 3.5 million bottles from entering the waste stream with our water bottle filling stations.

• The first three Envision-verified projects in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have all been built at our airports. These three taxiway rehabilitation projects achieved this recognition from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure by including recycled paving materials, LED lighting conversions and demolition waste recycling.

• Our parking garage lighting upgrades completed in 2025 will save 8 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually – enough to power approximately 800 single family homes each year!
