September 23 marks International Day of Sign Languages, a day dedicated to supporting and protecting the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf individuals. The City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation is committed to creating a welcoming and supportive travel experience for everyone. Access PHL includes all the resources visitors can utilize while visiting the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).
One complimentary resource PHL offers its guests is access to the Aira ASL app for deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers. Using the app, passengers can instantly connect with a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter through live video, with the option to enable real-time captions.
“At PHL, we continually seek opportunities to improve access and create a more inclusive airport experience for all,” said Director of Guest Experience Leah Douglas. “By offering the Aira ASL app free of charge to our guests, we are reinforcing our commitment to ensuring that everyone who travels through PHL feels welcomed, valued, and appreciated.”
Additionally, PHL offers complimentary access to Aira Explorer for travelers who are blind or have low vision while at the airport. Using the Aira app, you can connect with a trained visual interpreter who can describe your surroundings, read signs, help you locate gates, restrooms, and dining options, and provide turn-by-turn guidance throughout the terminal.
Every journey and traveler is unique. PHL offers mobility assistance, a quiet room, accessible wayfinding, support for hidden disabilities, language services, mothers' rooms, and dedicated staff to ensure all travelers can navigate PHL according to their needs.
