This year, Philadelphia is preparing to host an impressive lineup of events, including
NCAA tournament games, the FIFA World Cup matches, MLB All-Star Game, and celebrations marking the nation’s 250th birthday. The nation’s Semiquincentennial Celebration and the sporting events are expected to draw significant crowds with a huge number of guests expected to pass through Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) terminals. PHL is not only preparing for increased travel demand but also creating memorable experiences that reflect the city’s vibrant spirit and showcase the airport’s role as a gateway to the city.
March Madness Celebration
On March 18, ahead of the first and second rounds of the NCAA March Madness tournament in South Philadelphia, PHL officially kicked off its celebration for the exciting 2026 event season,
“We’re here to celebrate the employees and all of our guests today and make sure that everybody’s aware of all these awesome events that are coming our way in 2026,” said Leah Douglas, Director of Guest Experience at PHL.
PHL’s CFO and interim CEO Tracy Borda, energized the crowd before cutting the ribbon with the cheer, “It’s happening! We are here and we are ready! Good things start here!”
Airport Activations Engage Guests
The celebration offered a preview of what travelers can expect in the months ahead
and brought together airport employees and passengers for a day filled with activities, games, and giveaways. The airport transformed its space at the B/C connector into an interactive entertainment zone, featuring arcade-style games and sports simulators where travelers and employees could enjoy basketball, golf, soccer, and baseball-themed experiences, along with merchandise giveaways and photo opportunities. Guests had the chance to snap pictures with Philadelphia Eagles mascot Swoop, Philadelphia Union mascot Phang, Libby the Liberty Bell and the Phillies Ball Girls
The event highlighted how PHL plans to engage visitors throughout the year. March Madness signage wrapped all of the Information booths and digital signage highlighted all the good things coming in 2026. Interactive games will be introduced in alignment with the events. With NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, also known as March Madness, held on March 20-22, a basketball hoop installation remained at the airport through the weekend. The next installation will include putt-putt courses for fans attending the PGA Championship in May.
