PHL Access & Accessible Programs: Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program & AIRA App

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) offers programs to help passengers that might need a little extra assistance in their travels. As part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, passengers can stop by any information counter throughout the airport and pick up a green lanyard with sunflowers which allow passengers identify their need for additional support. The lanyards help travelers to navigate the airport with ease as it provides employees an easy way to see those who might need assistance.

Initially developed in the United Kingdom, the program helps those with hidden disabilities such as epilepsy, diabetes, sleep disorders, pain, asthma, fatigue, dizziness, brain injuries, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and Crohn’s disease. Since last year, PHL's Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program has provided more than 1,200 lanyards to traveling guests.

“If an individual needs a little extra help because of a disability, then the sunflower lanyard is for them,” said PHL’s Director of Access and Accessible Programs Saron McKee. “It is important to know that help is available even if a person does not have a lanyard - just let someone know what is needed!”

The AIRA App helps those with impaired or limited vision make their way through PHL. Passengers use the app to connect with a real person online who can visually view spaces via a passenger’s camera phone. The AIRA operator will read signs and provide directions and navigation for individuals as they walk throughout the airport. People with low vision or blindness can download the AIRA app and create an account with their personal preferences.

“PHL travelers used 2,700 minutes of AIRA over the past year,” said McKee. “We are excited to provide sunflower lanyards and the AIRA app, as well as other programs at PHL to enhance the travel experience of people with visible and invisible disabilities.”
