PHL Impression Makers: Chickie’s & Pete’s Bartender Carlos A. Pena

Chickie’s & Pete’s Bartender Carlos A. Pena recently received the “Impression Makers” award in the second round of Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) Employee Recognition Program. This award recognizes customer-facing employees who provide direct customer service to passengers.

As a bartender at Chickie’s and Pete’s in Terminal E—one of the concession's busiest locations in the airport-- Pena welcomes guests and takes their food and drink orders. On a typical workday, he and his coworkers clean and monitor operations of the restaurant to meet guests' needs. Pena also processes guests' transactions and stocks and maintains bar inventory supply.

Carlos“I’m glad I was chosen to work for Chickie’s & Pete’s, a Philadelphia staple,” said Pena. “I take pride in everything I get involved with and my main priority is giving 120 percent.”

Pena works 1-10 p.m. Fridays-Tuesdays. He enjoys the lively and fast environment of the industry and particularly appreciates the vibe Chickie’s & Pete’s brings to the airport.

“I’ve been involved in the food and beverage industry for over 15 years,” said Pena. “I’ve bartended at stadiums, concert venues, after-hours, night clubs, craft cocktail bars, and now the airport, which I think is the most challenging.”

In his recommendation of Pena, Chickie’s & Pete’s General Manager  Paul Porter said, “Carlos rapidly ascended to the top tier of bartender talent. He always puts the needs of the business and the guest at the forefront to ensure that their dining experience is exceptional.”

Porter also noted customer comments which included praising Pena for having a great personality, being punctual, committed, friendly, and doing a fantastic job. One customer review thanked Pena for assisting an elderly couple that needed assistance using a QR reader. Another customer review recognized Pena for his above and beyond customer service skills while assisting them navigate the menu with a shellfish allergy.

Pena is humble and cannot imagine being recognized without mentioning his coworkers.

“Honestly, my whole team deserves this award collaboratively,” said Pena.  “The entire team is the reason why our restaurant operates flawlessly. When everyone plays their part with a positive attitude, we only continue thriving.”

“I have worked around many different teams, but this by far has to be the top of the crop,” Pena added.

Pena spent his childhood in Philadelphia and has a strong passion for the city and its sports teams. “This is the best city,” said Pena. “I live for Philly sports, and no one has better food than us. I love traveling and representing our sports teams with pride.”

At PHL, Pena transcends customer expectations and proactively communicates with respect and integrity.

“I have the best job in the world, along with the best team,” said Pena. “It is also great when you are provided with all the necessary tools to do your job effectively. I thank the airport for maintaining our safety and assisting us on our daily operations.”
