PHL Unsung Heroes - Department of Aviation Administrative Support Manager Alycia Speas

Department of Aviation Administrative Support Manager Alycia Speas, known by coworkers for being passionate, helpful, and efficient, recently received the “Unsung Heroes” award from Philadelphia International Airport’s (PHL) Employee Recognition Program. This award is designed to honor employees who play vital behind-the-scenes roles. While they do not engage directly with guests, their dedicated efforts significantly improve airport administrative operations and the overall guest experience.

As an Administrative Support Manager, Speas leads the team that manages office operations within the Department of Aviation’s Executive, Administrative, and Human Resources offices. Their responsibilities encompass reception services, conference room reservations, mail delivery, supply distribution, and maintenance coordination. She joined PHL in December 2012.

While working, Speas demonstrates values of teamwork, proactive communication, effectiveness, and respect.

In her nomination of Speas, Travelers Aid International Volunteer Program Manager Morgan McBrearty stated, “I am thrilled to nominate Alycia for the Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her extraordinary contributions behind the scenes that significantly impact our guests’ experiences. Alycia’s tireless efforts, proactive communication, teamwork, respect, and effectiveness are commendable. One notable contribution from Alycia and her team is consistently printing coloring books for our information counters whenever they are asked. This thoughtful addition has proven to be a delightful surprise for families traveling with young children, offering them a creative and engaging activity. By printing and supplying these coloring books, Alycia and her team have made a significant difference in the experience of our youngest travelers, ensuring their time with us is enjoyable and memorable. Her respect and dedication to effectiveness create a harmonious and productive environment that directly translates to the quality of service we provide to our guests. Alycia and her team may not always see the immediate impact of their work. Still, their behind-the-scenes efforts contribute immensely to the positive experiences our guests enjoy every day. I wholeheartedly believe that Alycia embodies the spirit of an Unsung Hero, and I am grateful for her unwavering commitment to excellence. Her contributions are invaluable, and recognition of the support she provides is well-deserved.”

Speas attributes her strong work ethic and integrity to her parents, who were former city employees. Over the years, Speas has learned how to use various computer applications and participated in professional development programs.

“The work of the Administrative Support Unit is integral to the success of the Department of Aviation,” said Speas. “Our motto, “We make everyone else look good,” resonates with me, and I take great satisfaction in identifying and resolving issues proactively.”

At PHL, Speas enjoys the camaraderie and humor she shares with her colleagues. She aspires for the Administrative Support Unit to serve as a gateway for new clerical assistants entering the city and to develop advanced-level administrative assistants who can effectively support PHL leaders.

“Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming Saletha Scruggs to the management team,” said Speas. “She has quickly established herself as a valuable collaborator, contributing significantly to our brainstorming sessions and fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. Our shared backgrounds contribute to a relatable and enjoyable work environment.”

Speas appreciates Philadelphia's rich cultural diversity, especially African, Vietnamese, Caribbean, and Italian cuisine. She enjoys attending various festivals in the city with her daughter, including the annual Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival.

“My project management skills have been cultivated through various opportunities at PHL, allowing me to lead projects for the Department of Aviation and initiate efficiency improvements within my unit,” said Speas. “I credit the airports for the invaluable experience I have gained over the years. From the outset, I recognized the importance of accommodating our guests and learning from senior administrative assistants and exceptional supervisors.”

The PHL Employee Recognition Program was established by the airport’s Guest Experience (GX) Department.
