January 2021 Newsletter
Chellie Cameron

A Message from CEO Chellie Cameron:

Hi Team PHL/PNE,

I wish I could say that as we turn our calendars to the new year, the challenges of 2020 have disappeared, but COVID-19 continues to have an impact  on the aviation industry and will for some time. However, I believe that the way our team responded to the difficulties of the past year has prepared us for 2021 and beyond. Here are some of the things that I think we should all be proud of:

Cargo: PHL has been developing our cargo expansion plans for several years. The rise in e-commerce and the need for cold storage for pharmaceutical freight resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, caused us to evaluate our timeline and pursue our cargo development more aggressively. PHL’s new Cargo Council is making the connections needed to boost our cargo activity.

COVID-19 Testing: Throughout the year, we worked closely with our airport partners and the local business community on measures to help rebuild passengers’ confidence in the travel experience. The Jefferson Health COVID-19 Testing Clinic at Philadelphia International Airport, powered by Rapid Reliable Testing opened in early December, to provide passengers with easy access to multiple testing options. In just a few weeks, about 60 people a day were using the facility.

Financial Stewardship: The loss of revenue resulting from the pandemic devastated our finances. In addition to reworking budgets and reducing expenditures, our Finance team spent many hours preparing for a bond refunding deal to help provide some relief in the coming years as we continue toward recovery.

Just before Christmas, the second federal stimulus package was passed by Congress, and President Trump signed it on December 27. The relief bill designates $2 billion for airports and concessionaires. While we had hoped for more funding, we are grateful to have been included in the package. Just before the final vote, airports had been eliminated from the bill, and we are relieved that we made the final cut. Thank you to our elected officials for recognizing airports’ needs and including us in the bill.

2020 was a demanding year for everyone professionally and personally. I continue to be awed by the resiliency and dedication of our team. It might not seem like it at this moment, but brighter days will come. And we will emerge stronger and better than ever.

I wish you all a happy, safe and healthy new year. Thank you for all you do every day for our guests, our stakeholders and each other.
